Product Detailed Description

Liposomal Silymarin 70% — High Bioavailability Liver Support Supplement

Product Overview

liposomal Silymarin 70% is a premium-grade dietary supplement ingredient delivering silymarin in an advanced liposomal delivery system. Silymarin (CAS 65666-07-1) is a standardized extract from the seeds of Silybum marianum (L.) Gaertn., commonly known as milk thistle. It is a mixture of flavonolignans consisting primarily of silybin A and B (also known as silibinin), isosilybin A and B, silychristin, isosilychristin, and silydianin. Silybin accounts for 60–70% of the total silymarin content and is considered the primary marker compound responsible for its pharmacological action. The extract is typically standardized to contain 70%–80% silymarin by HPLC, calculated as silybin.

Silymarin has been used for centuries as a hepatoprotective agent and is widely utilized in pharmaceutical and nutraceutical formulations for liver disorders. It acts through multiple mechanisms, including antioxidant activity, inhibition of hepatotoxin binding to hepatocyte membrane receptors, reduction of Glutathione oxidation, and stimulation of ribosomal RNA polymerase leading to enhanced hepatocyte regeneration.

Why Liposomal Technology?

Conventional silymarin presents significant formulation challenges. The compound has poor water solubility, and its oral absorption is only about 23–47%, leading to an extremely low oral bioavailability of 0.73%. Silymarin undergoes extensive phase II metabolism in the intestine and liver, primarily into glucuronide and sulfate conjugates, which further limits its systemic exposure.

Liposomal encapsulation provides four critical advantages:

1. Dramatically Enhanced Bioavailability — A lecithin-based phytosomal-liposomal formulation of silymarin achieved a 3.5-fold higher oral bioavailability compared to silymarin suspension. The formulation showed maximum entrapment (55%) for a lecithin–cholesterol ratio of 6:1. A separate liposomal formulation containing bile salts prepared by supercritical fluid technology achieved a 4.8-fold increase in AUC₀–ₜ compared to free silymarin.

2. Enhanced Hepatoprotection — In vitro studies on Chang liver cells showed 1.5-fold better hepatoprotection efficacy for the liposomal formulation compared to free silymarin, and 10-fold better prevention of ROS production in LPS-induced RAW 264.7 macrophages. In an in vivo paracetamol-induced hepatotoxicity model in Wistar rats, the liposomal formulation was more efficacious than silymarin suspension in protecting the liver and reducing associated inflammatory conditions.

3. Targeted Liver Delivery — The liposomal carrier system enables targeted delivery of silymarin to hepatocytes and inflammatory cells, enhancing its therapeutic efficacy at the site of action. This liver-targeting capability distinguishes liposomal silymarin from conventional formulations.

4. Enhanced Stability — The phospholipid bilayer protects silymarin from degradation during digestive transit, preserving its intact molecular structure until reaching optimal absorption sites in the small intestine.

Key Features

  • High Purity — Standardized to ≥70% silymarin by HPLC, ensuring consistent active content.

  • Liposomal Enhancement — Phospholipid bilayer encapsulation achieves a 3.5-fold higher oral bioavailability compared to silymarin suspension, with 1.5-fold better hepatoprotection and 10-fold better ROS prevention in vitro.

  • Targeted Liver Delivery — The liposomal carrier system enables targeted delivery of silymarin to hepatocytes and inflammatory cells, enhancing therapeutic efficacy at the site of action.

  • Multiple Hepatoprotective Mechanisms — Silymarin inhibits hepatotoxin binding to receptor sites on the hepatocyte membrane, reduces glutathione oxidation to enhance its level in the liver and intestine, acts as an antioxidant, and stimulates ribosomal RNA polymerase and subsequent protein synthesis, leading to enhanced hepatocyte regeneration.

  • Clinically Studied for Liver Disease — A 2007 Cochrane review of 13 randomized clinical trials assessed milk thistle in 915 patients with alcoholic and/or hepatitis B or C virus liver diseases. Silymarin has been approved in different doses for the treatment or adjuvant therapy for liver disorders by regulatory authorities of different countries.

  • NAFLD/MASLD Support — A 2025 Cochrane meta-analysis included 17 RCTs with 2,069 participants having MASLD, evaluating silymarin for metabolic dysfunction–associated steatotic liver disease.

  • Water-Dispersible — Suitable for capsules, tablets, powder drink mixes, and functional beverages.

  • Batch Traceability — Complete COA, HPLC chromatogram, and identity data provided for each batch.

Capsules / Tablets140 mg per serving1 capsule three times daily (420 mg/day); take with meals
Functional Beverages70–140 mg per 250 mLWater-dispersible; suitable for RTD formats
Powdered Drink Mixes140–280 mg per sachetBlend with artichoke extract or dandelion root for synergistic liver support
Liver Detox Formulas280–420 mg per servingOften combined with NAC, glutathione, or alpha-lipoic acid
NAFLD/MASLD Support Formulas280–420 mg per servingClinical trials have used 140 mg three times daily for 6 months

Recommended Dosage

Clinical studies and commercial products commonly recommend 280–420 mg of silymarin per day (calculated as silybin). A representative pharmaceutical product (Legalon 140) contains 140 mg of silymarin per capsule, with a recommended dose of one capsule three times daily (420 mg/day). Treatment for 1–3 months may be required before therapeutic effects are apparent. A prospective single-arm study in NAFLD and metabolic syndrome patients used 140 mg of silymarin thrice daily for 6 months with lifestyle intervention. For general liver support and antioxidant defense, 280–420 mg daily is commonly used. Liposomal formulations may allow for more efficient utilization of lower doses due to enhanced bioavailability.
