Product Detailed Description
Liposomal Eriocitrin 40% is a premium-grade dietary supplement ingredient delivering eriocitrin in an advanced liposomal delivery system. Eriocitrin (CAS 13463-28-0), also known as eriodictyol-7-O-rutinoside or eriodictioside, is a flavanone glycoside with the molecular formula C₂₇H₃₂O₁₅ and a molecular weight of 596.53 g/mol. It is a disaccharide derivative that consists of eriodictyol substituted by a 6-O-(α-L-rhamnopyranosyl)-β-D-glucopyranosyl moiety at position 7 via a glycosidic linkage. Eriocitrin occurs as a solid and is highly soluble in water, methanol, and ethanol, and is stable even under heat treatment conditions (121°C, 15 min) in acidic solution.
Eriocitrin is a naturally occurring flavanone glycoside predominantly found in citrus fruits, especially lemons (Citrus limon). The amount of eriocitrin in lemon is over 300-fold higher than that in other citrus fruits, making lemon peel the primary commercial source. It is found mainly in the peel (1,540 ppm in lemons and 1,280 ppm in limes), comprising the albedo and flavedo, and in juice vesicles (216 ppm in lemons and 197 ppm in limes), being more than 7 times more abundant in lemon peel than in the juice. Eriocitrin has been reported as the most potent antioxidant in citrus fruits, and its antioxidative activity is stronger than that of other flavonoid glycosides including neoeriocitrin, narirutin, naringin, hesperidin, and neohesperidin.
Conventional eriocitrin presents significant bioavailability challenges. The total bioavailability of eriocitrin is less than 1%, and only 5.68% of the ingested dose is absorbed. After oral administration, eriocitrin is resistant to pancreatic enzymes and is mostly deglycosylated by intestinal bacteria (Bacteroides distasonis or Bacteroides uniformis) to eriodictyol before absorption, with only a minimal amount absorbed as glycosylated in the upper intestine.
Liposomal encapsulation provides four critical advantages:
1. Enhanced Stability and Protection — The nanoincorporation of Citrus limon extract into liposomes was aimed at improving its antioxidant and antibacterial effects. The freeze-dried extract was loaded in liposomes, glycerosomes, and penetration-enhancer-containing vesicles prepared with propylene glycol (PG-PEVs). Results showed that the vesicles, especially glycerosomes and PG-PEVs, prevented oxidative damage and cell death, and inhibited bacterial proliferation.
2. Enhanced Cellular Uptake and Bioactivity — Liposomal encapsulation utilizes phospholipid-based carrier technology to protect eriocitrin during gastrointestinal transit and facilitate enhanced cellular uptake through membrane fusion and lipid-mediated pathways. The capability of the vesicles of improving efficacy of the extract in counteracting oxidative stress was studied in vitro in keratinocytes, demonstrating superior antioxidant effects compared to unencapsulated extract.
3. Complexation-Enhanced Solubility — Complexation between eriocitrin and hydroxypropyl β-cyclodextrin increased the eriocitrin water solubility from 4.1 ± 0.2 g/L to 11.0 ± 0.1 g/L and the dissolution rate from 37.0% to 100% in 30 min, and improved eriocitrin antioxidant stability maintaining a high fluorescence value until 8 hours with respect to the pure materials.
4. Sustained Release for Prolonged Metabolic Support — Liposomal delivery provides a controlled-release profile that maintains steady plasma levels of eriocitrin metabolites, supporting prolonged antioxidant and metabolic activity rather than a sharp peak followed by rapid decline.
High Purity — Standardized to ≥40% eriocitrin by HPLC, ensuring consistent active content.
Liposomal Enhancement — Phospholipid bilayer encapsulation improves antioxidant and antibacterial effects, with liposomal formulations preventing oxidative damage and cell death in keratinocytes.
Clinically Validated for Blood Sugar — A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, crossover study in 30 individuals with hyperglycemia (mean 123 ± 18 mg/dL) demonstrated that 200 mg/day of eriocitrin for 12 weeks significantly decreased blood glucose (−5%), HOMA-IR (−11%), glucagon (−13%), IL-6 (−14%), and TNF-α (−20%), while increasing GLP-1 by 17% (P ≤ .05).
Joint Health Support — Eriocitrin mitigates osteoarthritis development by suppressing chondrocyte inflammation and extracellular matrix degradation via the Nrf2/HO-1/NF-κB pathways, significantly slowing cartilage degeneration in vivo.
Potent Antioxidant Activity — Eriocitrin is the most potent antioxidant in citrus fruits, with antioxidative activity stronger than other flavonoid glycosides including neoeriocitrin, narirutin, naringin, hesperidin, and neohesperidin.
Ongoing Clinical Research — A clinical trial is evaluating Eriomin (70% eriocitrin) at 250 mg/day in combination with metformin (1,000 mg/day) for 12 weeks in pre-diabetic adults.
Water-Dispersible — Liposomal powder offers excellent dispersibility in aqueous systems; suitable for capsules, tablets, powder drink mixes, and functional beverages.
Batch Traceability — Complete COA, HPLC chromatogram, and identity data provided for each batch.

Clinical studies have evaluated eriocitrin across a range of doses. A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, crossover study in 30 individuals with hyperglycemia used 200 mg/day of Eriomin for 12 weeks, demonstrating significant reductions in blood glucose, HOMA-IR, glucagon, IL-6, and TNF-α, and a 17% increase in GLP-1. An ongoing clinical trial is evaluating Eriomin at 250 mg/day in combination with metformin (1,000 mg/day) in pre-diabetic adults. For general antioxidant and metabolic support, 100–250 mg daily is commonly used. Liposomal formulations may allow for more efficient utilization of lower doses due to enhanced bioavailability.
Important Safety Information: Eriocitrin has demonstrated concentration-dependent hemolysis at 20–100 μM in human erythrocytes, promoting premature erythrocyte death through hemolysis and eryptosis. This effect was significantly ameliorated in the presence of urea, sucrose, and polyethylene glycol 8000 (PEG). Individuals with known hypersensitivity to citrus flavonoids should avoid supplementation. Pregnant or lactating women and children should consult a healthcare professional before use.
